Effects of L-Theanine and Caffeine
If you're like 90% of the population, you're probably addicted to caffeine!
It might even be one of the first things you ingest in the morning. Around the world, caffeine is most commonly consumed in the form of coffee. And if you’re like us, you love coffee! But what about when that initial energy wears off and you start to crash? Or, in anticipation of the crash, you reach for a second cup but then come the jitters and anxiety? That’s when the love affair with coffee becomes a bit more complicated. So what do I do? Give up my coffee all together? No way! Turn to other forms of caffeine such as green tea? Maybe. But what if you could actually optimize your coffee while taking away the negative side effects of too much caffeine?
Intriguing, right? That’s where L-Theanine and Dose My Coffee come in!
What is L-Theanine?
L-Theanine is an amino acid that is most commonly found in green tea. It has been found to increase GABA production in the brain which helps manage stress and create alpha brain waves.Alpha brain waves increase feelings of calm and relaxation without causing drowsiness. It’s what gives you that wakeful, yet serene feeling. It’s this aspect that gives it anti-anxiety properties. Alpha brain waves have also been associated with increased creativity and have become well known for their association with “flow state.” Neurochemistry also suggests that L-Theanine increases both serotonin and dopamine levels in the brain, which increases mood. Okay, so, less stress, more creativity, better mood, sounds great, right?
It gets better.
Effects of Caffeine and L-Theanine
In recent years there have been a multitude of studies on the effects of caffeine in combination with L-Theanine. Not only does the combination of L-Theanine and caffeine decrease the negative side effects of coffee which include jitters, anxiety and crash, it has also shown promising results in the improvement of mood, cognition, memory recall and sustained attention. One recent study found that the combination of 50mg of caffeine and 100mg of L-Theanine increased both speed and accuracy of cognitive performance and lowered susceptibility to distraction. This means increased focus, performance and attention and who couldn’t use more of that?
While each substance has benefits on its own, it is clear that when combined, caffeine and L-theanine support and enhance the function of the other.
